Degree Day Map
Base-50 degree days. (Accumulated degree days shown; departure from average shown in parentheses.)

One cold day

Our first degree-day accumulation map represents the degree days generated in Iowa for one day, a cold one at that. Accumulated base 50 F degree days were only 45 percent of normal, but that is for only one day. This illustrates what we already know: that Iowa weather, measured by heat accumulations, can be extremely variable from day to day.

On May 3, crop specialists reported the progress of corn planting at about 85 percent planted statewide, with about 15 to 20 percent of soybeans planted. Corn is emerging slowly around the state.
