Severe weather raises issues

Severe storms struck most of Iowa the end of last week. Weather-related crop damage issues included sheet and rill erosion, flooding, hail, and even remnant damage from frost in northern Iowa on May 15. The watchword for most Iowa agriculture following dramatic weather events is to wait and see. In general, the best early indicator of crop damage is watching the young plants for recovery. As the crop is recovering, a good early activity is checking for field border and drains to clean up debris and repair washouts. So far, May has been about on average in temperatures, with rapid cropplanting and favorable early growth.
