Black cutworms still cutting

Black cutworms were found damaging corn June 13 in Appanoose County. Corn was in the V2-V4 stage and cutworms were mostly drilling into the stalk below the soil line. Plants were wilted, which was easy to see, but cutworms were more difficult to find because they were not always near the damaged plant. Cutworm size was variable, ranging from 5/8- to 1-inch long. Fields that are still at a very early stage of growth should be scouted until they reach the V5 stage. At this point, stalk diameter is usually large enough that cutworms are no longer a problem. See the May 26 ICM newsletter, pages 70-71, for additional information on scouting and management of black cutworms.
