Welcome to the 1999 Precision Agriculture Edition

Welcome to the 1999 special issue of the Integrated Crop Management newsletter on precision agriculture, marking our third year of this special edition. It presents research results and educational accomplishments of Iowa State University faculty and staff in the College of Agriculture and of extension staff in the field. We show just a sampling of our research. We outline what we have discovered and share what we do not know, which is also vitally important. Good research on and off campus generally leads to more questions and our work in precision agriculture is no exception. The more we work in this exciting area, the more questions we can raise. Producers, commodity group partners, industry representatives, and consultants verify this by their questions. Two years ago, Executive Associate Dean of the College of Agriculture, Colin Scanes, stated that "it's not a question of whether the tools of precision agriculture will be used on Iowa farms, but how they can be used ...". The College of Agriculture and extension field staff are committed to answering the "how" of this question. The distant vision remains as well as the short-term expectations of precision agriculture for Iowa. The path to that vision, however, relies upon persistence, step-by-step progress over time, and realistic expectations. The College of Agriculture and ISU Extension are dedicated to this vision and look forward to working with you.
