This information was summarized from an April 30 teleconference with ISU extension field specialists in crops.

Corn planting progress was made during the past week in most areas of the state. Wet conditions in the northeast, southeast, and northwest slowed progress. Estimates by percentage of corn planted are shown in the table below.

• Few soybean fields have been planted statewide, ranging from none to 15 percent.
• Most of the forages and pastures came through winter very well. There are reports of alfalfa winterkill in small areas of some fields. Areas that winterkilled were older stands, fields that were harvested late last fall, and in some cases areas on northwest-facing slopes or along waterways. Winterkill in orchardgrass also was reported. Some pastures have been grazed too early this spring.
• Oats were planted later than normal. Oats in some fields are 2-3 inches tall.
• A few alfalfa weevils and clover leaf weevils were reported in southern Iowa.
• Some black cutworms have been caught in traps (see article [1]).
