• Hail and more rain occurred this past week. Precipitation amounts reported ranged from half an inch up to 6 inches. Damaging hail occurred in several counties, including Lyon, Osceola, Buena Vista, Dickinson, Emmet, Jasper, Poweshiek, and Greene. The damage in these areas is widespread.
• Corn planting and replanting are completed. The growth stage ranges from V5 to V8, except for fields recently replanted. Black cutworm, wireworm, seedcorn maggot, and white grub damage were reported. In some cornfields black cutworm larvae are 1/2 inch and may affect small plants. Rotted mesocotyls and crowns continue to be a concern and are causing stand loss.
• Soybean planting and replanting continue. Growth stage is typically V2 to V3 for early-planted fields. The main problems reported were seedling rots, variegated cutworm, and black cutworm. Loopers chewed off soybean plants in a couple of fields. Bean leaf beetles do not seem to be a problem in most areas.
• Alfalfa and hay harvest continue with much of the cut hay receiving at least one rain shower. Much of the hay was cut when it was very mature, so quality will be low. Some potato leafhoppers were reported. There were several reports of variegated cutworms affecting alfalfa regrowth.
• In southern counties winter wheat is starting to ripen. The oat crop is short and stunted in the southern counties with excess moisture, and in other areas it looks good.
