This information was summarized from a May 6 teleconference with Iowa State University extension field specialists in crops.

• Corn planting is almost complete statewide, except for the northeast. Progress was slowed in some areas because of scattered rain. Estimates by percentage of corn planted are shown in the table. Corn emergence has been slow.
• Soybean planting ranges from 20 to 40 percent completed in the northwest, southeast, and central Iowa counties to less than 15 percent completed in other areas of the state.
• A couple of cornfields with wireworms, seed corn maggot feeding, or flea beetles were reported.
• The overwintering generation of bean leaf beetles is present in some alfalfa fields.
• Alfalfa fields look good and are progressing to first cut. Sandblasting of new alfalfa seedings and scattered frost were reported in the northwest. Alfalfa weevils were reported, but none of the scouted fields were above threshold. See related article on page 52 of the April 29, 2002, ICM newsletter.
• Small grains are looking good. Rye is heading out. Winter wheat is up to 18 inches.
