Field Days: Summer opportunities

Iowa State University Research and Demonstration Farms will host 14 field days through September. A wide variety of topics related to crops and livestock will be covered.

The schedule and topics for the summer and fall field days are listed below; they will take place rain or shine. The public is welcome. Program information for summer field days is subject to change. The information also is available at www.ag.iastate.edu/farms/fielddays.html [2].

Summer Field Days

Iowa State University Horticulture Station (near Ames)

June 19, noon. The station is 11/2 miles east of the Highway 69/E-23 intersection on the east side of Gilbert. The topic includes fruit and vegetable production issues.

Armstrong Research and Demonstration Farm*

June 21, 5 p.m. The farm is located 11 miles southwest of Atlantic on Highway 6, 1/2 mile south on M-53, then 3/4 mile east. Program topic is the use of high tunnels at the Southeast Research and Demonstration Farm for growing horticultural crops.

Southeast Research and Demonstration Farm

June 22, 1 p.m. The farm is located 13/4 miles south of Crawfordsville, then 2 miles east on G-62 (Wyman pavement), and then north 3/4 mile on the Washington/Louisa county-line road. The program topic includes crop production activities.

Northeast Research and Demonstration Farm

June 28, 1:30 p.m. The farm is located 1 mile west of the intersection of Highways 218 and B-60, which is 1 mile south and 1/4 mile east of Nashua on 218. The program topic includes crop production activities.

Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm

June 28, 9 a.m. The Sutherland farm is located 11 miles north of Cherokee on U.S. Highway 59 and 1/4 mile east on County Road B-62. The program topic includes crop production activities.

Northern Research and Demonstration Farm

June 29, 9:30 a.m. The farm is just south of Kanawha on County Road R-35. The program topic includes crop production activities.

Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm

July 12, 9 a.m. Program topics include controlled drainage, tile installation, and wetland construction.

Muscatine Island Research and Demonstration Farm

July 17, 5 p.m. The farm is located east of Highway 61/92 at G-38 and North Street. Program topics include vegetable production activities.

Late Summer Field Days

Neely-Kinyon Research and Demonstration Farm*

August 23, 4 p.m. The farm is 2 miles south of Greenfield on Highway 25, 1 mile east, and 1/4 mile north. Organic crop production topics will be discussed.

Western Research and Demonstration Farm*

August 23, 10 a.m. The farm is 4 miles east of Castana on County Road E-34. The topic will be feeding corn byproducts.

ISU Agricultural Engineering/Agronomy Research and Demonstration Farm

August 24, 10 a.m. 2237 240th St., between Ames and Boone on Highway 30. The site is 1 mile south of U.S. 30 on W Avenue, then 1/2 mile east on 240th Street. The topic will be corn production issues. A lunch will be served at noon.

Northeast Research and Demonstration Farm

August 26, 9 a.m. At the farm near Nashua. Wine and related grapevine management information will be presented.

September 7, 1:30 p.m. At the farm near Nashua. Crop production topics will be discussed.

Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm

August 29, 6:30 p.m. At the farm near Sutherland. Crop production topics will be discussed.

Armstrong Research and Demonstration Farm*

August 30, 9:30 a.m. At the farm near Lewis. Crop production topics will be discussed

Northern Research and Demonstration Farm

September 8, 10:30 a.m. At the farm near Kanawha. The 75th Anniversary Celebration of the farm.

Southeast Research and Demonstration Farm

September 13, 1 p.m. At the farm near Crawfordsville. Crop production topics will be discussed.

McNay Research and Demonstration Farm*

September 14, 10 a.m. At the farm near Chariton. Go south from the Highway 34 and 65 intersection 4 miles (on 65), then 21/2 miles east on a gravel road, and then turn north for 3/4 mile. The headquarters is on the west side of the road. 50th Anniversary Celebration of the farm.
