Coneflower (Echinacea species)

Overview

Native to North America, coneflowers are herbaceous perennial plants. Purple coneflower is a perennial garden favorite that flowers from summer into fall with purple flowers held high on sturdy stems.

Hardiness- zones 3 through 9

Height- 1 to 3 feet tall

Flower- Coneflowers have large, daisy like flowers that are pink to purple and range from 2.5 inches to 5 inches wide.

Bloom Time- summer through fall

Site Requirements- Coneflowers prefer full sun and dry, well-drained soils. They are tolerant of poor, rocky soils. During very hot summers, flower color may be brighter if located in part shade.

Features- Coneflowers are native to North America and are very tolerant perennials. Their long, sturdy stems make them ideal for cut flowers.

Varieties- The cultivar ‘Alba’ has white flowers and ‘Crimson Star’ has crimson red flowers.
