Iowa State Contribution Timeline

Fall/Winter 1998

• Search for a part-time computer specialist was difficult.
• Diana Vincent hired in February 1999.
• We run into limitations in Netscape Compass Server's poorly documented Java API.

Spring 1999

• Netscape bought by AOL
• Free academic licensing for Compass Server ends
• Netscape contact refuses to return calls or e-mail
• One Netscape employee provides some needed info on third-party bulletin board. This later stops following layoffs at Netscape.

Late Spring/Summer 1999

• May 1, 1999. After conferring with Ron Stinner at NCSU, we drop Compass Server and begin duplication of Compass Server's capabilities on our own.
