Title
SCN resistance for long-term SCN Management

Monica Pennewitt, Iowa State University graduate student, discusses her research on soybean cyst nematode. The soybean cyst nematode (SCN) or Heterodera glycines is the most damaging pathogen to soybean production in North America. Current annual yield losses are estimated at more than $1.2 billion.Though SCN-resistant soybean varieties are available to minimize yield loss, producers are faced with limited options for rotation once virulent SCN populations develop in their fields.

Mosquito research

Caleb Corona discusses his collaborative research on mosquitos and their resistance to insecticides.

Crop Scouting Competition

The Iowa State University Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program is pleased to present the ninth annual Crop Scouting Competition for Iowa Youth. Middle school and high school students (those completing grades 7-12) from Iowa are invited to compete and showcase crop scouting abilities in corn and soybean. The competition will be a one day event focusing on outdoor learning. Previous sponsors include Corteva, Iowa Soybean Association, Iowa Independent Crop Consultants Association, ScoutPro, Iowa Certified Crop Advisors, and Environmental Tillage Systems.

Sporecaster - Predicting white mold in soybean

Sporecaster is a new smartphone application designed to help farmers predict the need for a fungicide application to control white mold in soybean. The app, which is free to use, was developed with support from the Wisconsin Soybean Association and Wisconsin Soybean Marketing Board. It was programmed by personnel in the UW-Madison Nutrient and Pest Management Program. In this video Iowa State University Plant Pathology graduate student Andrew Penney discusses using the Sporecaster app.

Harrison Outreach

Outreach for Harrison County includes field days, presentations a local events, videos and news articles. Handouts have been distributed at local retailers and county events (Harrison County crop fair, Private Pesticide Applicator Training, Denison/Atlantic Crop Advantage Series). The project has been mentioned or promoted at the local crop fair, local extension events, and the county extension board meetings.

Pork producers planting habitat for monarchs

Since 2015, farmers from the Iowa Pork Producers Association have collaborated with researchers from Iowa State University to plant and survey monarch habitat plots on their land. Ben Crawford, Iowa pork producer, describes his three-year experience with the habitat project — and explains why patience was the key to success!  Tom Tiernan, Iowa pork producer, describes his three-year experience with the habitat project — and highlights the importance of diverse partnerships!

Detecting soybean sudden death syndrome using remote sensing

Muhammad Mohsin Raza, a graduate research assistant at Iowa State University in the Plant Pathology and Microbiology department, discusses his research project in this video. Soybean sudden death syndrome is a disease of major economic importance in the North and South Americas regarding yield losses. Monitoring soybean health and detecting SDS at initial crop stages is essential to facilitate sustainable, environment-friendly, and cost-effective management practices in grower’s fields.
